Life insurance

Understand the main types of life insurance.

Every policy is either built for a set number of years or designed to last for life. These are the five families, and what sets each one apart.

Coverage for a set period

  • Term life

Coverage for a set number of years. The simplest product in the category, and the one built for needs with an end date.

Designed for: Temporary protection — income, a mortgage, dependent years

Coverage designed to last for life

  • Whole life

Permanent coverage with a contractual premium and a guaranteed schedule of cash values written into the policy. Some contracts are participating and may pay dividends, which are never guaranteed.

Designed for: Permanent protection where contractual certainty matters

  • Universal life (UL)

Permanent coverage with flexible premiums and an often-adjustable death benefit. On traditional designs the policy value earns interest at a rate the insurer declares, subject to a contractual minimum.

Designed for: Permanent protection with premium flexibility

  • Indexed universal life (IUL)

Universal life where interest is worked out from a formula referencing a market index, subject to a cap, participation rate or spread and a floor. Nothing is invested in the index.

Designed for: Permanent coverage with index-linked crediting and a floor

  • Variable universal life (VUL)

Universal life with investment options whose values rise and fall with the markets they invest in. The only policy family where the owner takes investment risk directly.

Designed for: Permanent coverage with investment allocation choice

Final expense, guaranteed issue and participating whole life are not separate families. They are a purpose, a way of being underwritten and a kind of whole life contract, and the overview shows where each one fits.

Term Life

A death benefit for a set number of years, and generally nothing else to manage.

How long it lasts
A period chosen at purchase — commonly 10, 20 or 30 years. Coverage ends when the term does unless it is renewed or converted.
What's guaranteed
The death benefit and the premium for the level term period, as the contract states them.
What it costs at the start
Commonly lower for the same death benefit during the level term, because the insurer is covering a defined number of years.

Whole Life

Permanent coverage with a contractual premium and a guaranteed cash value schedule.

How long it lasts
Designed to stay in force for life, as long as the policy's terms are met. There is no end date to plan around.
What's guaranteed
The premium, the death benefit and the cash-value schedule, subject to policy terms. Dividends, where a policy pays them, are not guaranteed.
What it costs at the start
Commonly higher for the same death benefit, reflecting permanent coverage and the cash value built into the design.
